Often built when the ruling king was still alive, so they ended up looking more like miniature palaces than simple memorials. Hue has eight notable royal tombs to the southeast of the former citadel. The most outstanding are Gia Long is 16km from the city; Minh Mang Tomb, covering an area of 18ha, 12km from Hue; Tu Duc Tomb is 8km away; Khai Dinh tomb is 10km from Hue.
